Wet shoes, grit and indoor heating change the demands on your floor. A few consistent habits make everyday care easier.

Catch dirt at the entrance

In wetter months, shoes can carry moisture and abrasive grit indoors. Use suitable entrance mats and clean them regularly so they continue to do their job. Check that any mat backing is compatible with your floor finish. Remove trapped grit from entrance areas with a soft brush or an appropriate vacuum attachment rather than allowing it to spread through the room.

Clean for the finish you have

Choose a cleaner recommended for the floor’s existing finish. Use a well-wrung mop and avoid leaving standing water on timber. Wipe up spills promptly. A product suitable for one finish may be unsuitable for another, and using more cleaner does not necessarily improve the result. If you do not know whether your floor is oiled, lacquered or treated differently, ask before changing products.

Pay attention when the heating comes on

Timber responds to changes in its surroundings. Follow the flooring manufacturer’s guidance for indoor conditions and, where relevant, underfloor heating. Avoid sudden changes outside the recommended operating conditions. New or pronounced gaps, movement or lifting deserve an assessment, especially if moisture is suspected. Do not try to disguise a developing problem with a surface treatment.

Check the small points of wear

Inspect furniture pads and replace worn or missing ones. Lift furniture when moving it rather than dragging it across the surface. Look closely at high-traffic routes and entrance areas: a finish wearing through locally may need attention before the whole floor looks tired. Protect the floor during decorating or other work using a covering appropriate to the finish and its curing status.

When to ask for help

Persistent marks, changes in colour, loose boards or a finish that no longer responds to normal cleaning are reasons to seek advice. DJM can discuss maintenance, repair and restoration for domestic and commercial timber floors in West Sussex. Send a clear photograph of the affected area, a wider view of the room and details of your cleaning products. This helps establish the next step, although the condition and suitable treatment may still need checking in person.
